5s take on an inner role of the burrower. The burrower finds a nook in their experiences, a room from which to sit and watch with surveillance monitors and a periscope. They dig deeper if there is danger of being seen by thieves or potential intruders from the world above. The burrower retreats from exposure and situations in which they will be vulnerable to demands, obligations, and anything that could possibly cause drainage.
5s have an inner setting of the underground colony. The underground colony is a system of routes and rooms. Each room has its own tool, idea, or resource. Each room has an access code that the burrower created and has never shared. The burrower lives alone in this underground system with the contents of their imaginations and objects of interest. The more rooms in the underground colony, and the more paths betwixt them, the more secure the burrower feels against potential intrusion and the more equipped they will feel if they have to meet a demand.
5s take on an outer role of the one who knows. The one who knows holds the route to useful sequences of rooms, the keys to all the rooms, as well as manuscripts with descriptions of the items within. If very special circumstances have convinced the burrower to allow a guest into the foyer, they are reluctant to share the rooms with the guest unless the guest makes it clear they come on a “look but don’t touch” basis. The one who knows shares only the contents of their observations and will look for an exit route if anything else is demanded from them. The one who knows is a constructed, elusive figure who uses knowledge and boundaries to create a pose with which they feel more comfortable.
5s have an outer setting of the world above. Whenever the one who knows makes an appearance in the world above, they are subject to the heat of the sun, which gradually drains and dries them. That is why, when receiving “commissions” from the world above, the one who knows must ensure that at the very most they are filling a clear and useful function that they are able to do within nighttime hours. Usually, the one who knows relies on their manuscripts and exchanges them for resources through pneumatic tubes from the underground colony. However, some of the ones who know learn to routinely work nighttime shifts and perform tasks in the world above to secure more solitude and privacy when they return to their underground colony.
5 externalize energy from the burrower to the one who knows in the form of symbols. Symbols are information which is interesting for its own sake and hopefully absorbs some of the pressure that a person would normally direct at the “one who knows” by being somewhat up to interpretation. Attention for its own sake is like a laser to the 5, it needs to be refracted by a knowledge buffer, and slightly-out-of-reach symbols are the best way to do so. Symbols are conveyed to others in the form of bulleting, the 5’s communication style. Through bulleting, information is broken down into isolated pieces which are interesting in their own right and reveal intriguing relationships when juxtaposed. It is like a web constructed over a niche corner of knowledge that collects facts as flies. Bullet includes a subject headline and a list of related bullet points that list the observation-flies caught on the web. The 5 collects a symbol like a slice of bread, breaks it down into crumbs, and casts it away from the self.
5s have an internalization pattern of deconstructing. Through deconstructing, the 5 receives information that is broken into individual components. These components can be reconstructed as the 5 sees fit but are often left as individual pieces. This minimizes the overall holistic intensity of an experience by dividing it into manageable chunks. Temporal perception is also divided such that experiences do not blend into each other, and the 5 pays attention to one spatial aspect at a time so that their focus of attention is laser-like, intense but very narrow in scope, the sort of light needed to illuminate the pathways of the underground colony. This attention style causes the 5 to lose sight of the big picture when a situation feels overwhelming or intense, and since the big picture is crucial to feeling a sense of security in a situation, the 5 will compensate through conscious fracturing and distilling of information to reinstate it.
5s have a past time orientation of the gatherer. The gatherer has collected all sorts of pertinent information for analysis, experiences for review, and items for evaluation. If the gatherer has fully metabolized an experience, all useful objects for the situation have been obtained, and all angles have been scrutinized. The 5 has already gathered their thoughts on that matter or considered that perspective. They have already built a room for that in their underground colony. Otherwise, the gatherer knows nothing or still has more to gather. So, when relaying past experiences, aliens give entire room tours or nothing at all.
5s have a present time orientation of the alien. The alien has noticed things that you haven’t. The alien feels isolated from others and from the corporeal in general. The mind is its own galaxy that can function with minimal outside involvement, sustained only by wires that provide vital functions. Sometimes the alien shifts to fill an ephemeral pose, an ephemeral function, but still has a feeling of precariousness, as if that pose will collapse without informational renovation. The alien is proud that they do not have to be subject to the same experiences and influences as the “terrestrials”, but it also makes them aware of just how precarious their poses are.
5s have a future time orientation of the elusive person. The elusive person does not want to do that, they would rather watch from their periscope and make observations, formalize those observations, and store them. The elusive person has opted out of as many potentially draining ventures as possible, preferring to spend their time and energy on their own terms. Their future is seemingly indefinite and open to underground exploration. If the elusive person has decided to make an appearance, they will spend a lot of time in preparation mode for the “one who knows” pose.
The gatherer, alien, and elusive person benefit from conceding (the solution). Making concessions means opening oneself up to being influenced by life, others, and experiences, and trusting that doing so will not incentivize others to “take all that they can get.”
5s can look to the receiver as an exemplary character. The receiver does not detach from their emotional experiences but rather considers and feels them in real-time. The receiver is open and receptive to the influence of others in the emotional and physical realms, and still manages to provide a unique and impartial perspective from the outside.
